What are those black lines around the baseboards?
I frequently get asked this question by clients when doing an inspection for carpet cleaning. You (today’s educated consumer) want to know two things: 1. What are those black lines around the edges of my carpet? 2. Will they come out?
Before I attempt to answer these questions let me first explain how they got there in the first place. There may not be one single cause for this nuisance, but it is usually multiple things. However, let’s start by properly naming these black lines. The proper name is: Filtration Soiling or Filtration lines. Filtration soiling occurs when polluted air within a home naturally flows through the tiny gap where the carpet meets the baseboard. Even the best carpet installation job will not eliminate this very small crease, therefore as air flows through the gaps it is being filtered by the carpet. Another example is: If you were to close off a particular room in your home by closing the door for an extended period, over time eventually you would notice a black or grayish line under the door where it was closed, this is because the air flowed under the door carrying microscopic particles which in turn got filtered by the carpet as it passed under the door, these particles bond to the carpet therefore creating filtration soiling.
So…will those filtration lines come out?! Well, that depends on the severity of the problem, the type of cleaning solutions and tools being used and ultimately, who is contracted to do the cleaning. Even the most reputable cleaning companies will have a challenging time removing filtration lines, however, with proper education, the right cleaning tools and solutions 50-60% removal can be achieved. This is a restorative service, therefore, expect to pay 20-25% more per space being cleaned.
Some causes of filtration soiling: dirty air ducts, cooking oil, candles, cigarette smoke, dust etc.
Some preventative measures: Vacuum edges of carpet regularly using the crevice tool provided on most vacuum cleaners today (preferably a hepa-filtered vacuum). Clean your air ducts at least every 3 years. Periodically, wipe the carpet around baseboards with a damp white towel.
Finally, hire a professional reputable carpet cleaning company, like Carpet Keepers, that is equipped to handle such problems as this. Remember to ask plenty of questions like: are you familiar with filtration soiling? what is your method for removing these lines? what is your guarantee? A company who wants your business will graciously answer your questions and address any concerns you may have.
Remember, a healthy home is a happy home!
